Every Saturday in September, grab your family or housemates and clean up your street, park, local shoreline, or favorite happy place! Join thousands of Californians in cleaning up close to home this year. Adopt a spot and pick up the trash before it gets to the ocean!

(Keep in mind it doesn’t HAVE to be a Saturday- your cleanup data from any day in September counts!)

Here’s how we’re doing it this year to keep everyone safe:

  • Don’t go out if you’re feeling sick
  • Wear disposable gloves
  • Avoid gathering in groups and wear a mask
  • Pick up trash with a picker if you have one (or borrow one from us by contacting Ashley)
  • Report your findings and contribute to an ongoing data set with the CleanSwell app
  • Show us your trashy treasures by tagging us on social media!

FAQ

  • What do I do with the trash I pick up?
    • Dispose of your trash in the proper roadside receptacles at your house. If you have large items or excess amounts of trash that won’t fit in your bin, you can schedule a RecycleMore pickup. Just note that it is a Coastal Cleanup pickup when you fill out the online request.
  • What if I don’t know what to do with an item?
    • Tune in on September 16 at 7pm on Zoom or Facebook Live for a talk with Tim (Napa Recycling) and Kendra (City of Napa Recycling Division) to learn about where to put some of those more tricky things you find during your cleanup.
    • Napa Recycling’s home page has a search bar to help you figure it out! If you’re still unsure, contact Ashley (info below).
  • What if I find a large item, like a bike frame or mattress, and I don’t want to haul it back to my house?
    • Take a photo of the item and request a RecycleMore pickup at the location of the item. Note on the request form that it is a Coastal Cleanup pickup. Take a picture of the item and email it to Ashley@NapaRCD.org and she will make sure it gets communicated to Napa Recycling.
  • What if I don’t want to use CleanSwell, but I’d still like to report my trash data?
    • You can fill out this online form or you can call Ashley with the weights of your landfill trash, recycling, and compost at the phone number below.
  • I don’t have a trash picker, but I would prefer to use one. Can I borrow one from Napa RCD?
    • Yes, you can! Contact Ashley (info below) to schedule an equipment pickup and return time. We also have buckets, some trash bags, and some gloves to lend.
  • What do I do if I see a littered unsheltered encampment?
    • DO NOT remove items from an active unsheltered encampment. Items you find there are the property of the individuals living there.
    • If the encampment is clearly abandoned, you can pick up the trash but please do not touch hazardous items (needles, etc) or organic waste (human waste, dog waste, toilet paper, etc).
    • ONLY pick up items from an abandoned encampment if you are wearing disposable gloves, and remove & dispose of those gloves immediately when you are finished with that area.
    • Take a photo and contact Ashley if you need to schedule a Recycle More pickup. If you are able, please leave items at a curb where a truck can easily pick it up.
  • Why is it important to report what I find?
