Every fall, the RCD collects, plants, and distributes acorns from native oak trees in our efforts to re-oak Napa County. We rely on volunteers to help us collect native oak acorns for plantings in our County and greatly appreciate those who have so generously collected and donated their time and acorns!

This year we received acorns from four different species of oak tree:
valley oak (Quercus lobata), coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia), blue oak (Quercus douglasii), and black oak (Quercus kelloggii).

More than 130 pounds of acorns were donated, including:
  • 30 pounds of blue oak acorns
  • 65 pounds of valley oak acorns
  • 27 pounds of coast live oak acorns
  • 6 pounds of black oak acorns

This translates to approximately 2, 220 blue oak acorns, 3, 900 valley oak acorns, 3, 807 coast live acorns, and 426 black oak acorns.

Acorns are sorted, cataloged, and matched to appropriate re-plant sites. Students, volunteers, and landowners use these acorns in planting projects locally such as: Alston and Skyline Park, schools, vineyards, ranches, and homes.

A very big thank you to our acorn donors:

Dan Zador, Bill Pramuk, Karen Ryder, Girl Scout Troops 20219 & 20056, 4-H, Elaine Hernick, Ethan Gladner, Dana Kopol Bonick, Amy Garden, Harms Lavender Farm and Vineyard, Leif Bryant, Chino Yip, Rick Fessenden, Tom Bunter, and others.

Thank you for donating your time and acorns. Y’all have supplied us with all of the acorns we will need this season! Can’t wait for next years harvest!
