First Saturday Volunteer Event- Alston Park

Join Napa RCD at Alston Park for the first First Saturday Volunteer Event of 2025!

Start the New Year off right with some time spent outside giving our restoration project at Alston Park a little bit of love. We’re working hard to outsmart the increasing vole population in Alston Park, and we need your help to make an impact on the ground. We’ve got a lot of work to do to get some grasses in check and rocks out of the way so our friends at Parks and Rec can safely get mowers and weed eaters into the area without causing damage to plantings.

What’s the Plan? Our plan is to clear grasses and rocks from directly around surviving trees and existing cages, and put bright flagging on all planting locations that have greenery peeking through. Once that is done, we will be ordering biodegradable tubes to put inside the existing cages as an added layer of protection. This process will need to happen for all plantings in Alston Park, including early plantings from 10 years ago. We will not accomplish all of this in one work day! This will be an ongoing winter project.

What to expect: Napa RCD will provide all training and bring all tools including gloves, rakes, McLeods, hoes, and flagging. Once you make it up the hill to our work area, there will be tasks for all ability levels. Folks should be prepared to be walking on uneven terrain for the majority of the work day.

What to wear: Sturdy shoes and clothes appropriate for the weather.

Where to meet: Please park at the Trower Ave entrance to Alston Park and head up the hill to the project area. Google Maps Location For Parking Is Here. Follow the sign once you arrive.
