This year’s Climate-Friendly Garden Tour is an exciting mix of ten public and private gardens throughout Napa and Yountville. We will be showcasing big and small changes you can make in your own yard to adjust to our changing climate and reduce your property’s water use.
Napa RCD and the City of Napa Water are again working with our longtime Garden Tour partner, the UCCE Master Gardeners of Napa County, to offer a variety of demos and workshops from your local experts! Some of the demos will take place at our central hub for the day, Las Flores Community Center, and others will take place at one of the gardens on the tour. No matter where the demos take place, these folks have got the knowledge to kickstart your climate-friendly gardening goals!
What is Climate-Friendly Gardening? We’re talking about gardening techniques that embrace our current and future climate. Gardening with native and other drought-tolerant plants, and focusing on soil health, wildlife habitat, stormwater collection, food security, waste reduction, and beauty are all techniques that help us make the most of every drop and space.
What’s special about this event? 10 gardens in Napa and Yountville will have the owners available to answer questions and share their practices and processes. Two out-of-the-ordinary stops we’ve added this year? The brand-new Yountville FarmGarden is kicking off its first growing season, and the Napa Valley Language Academy School Garden is going to be hosted by the students and teachers that care for the garden day in and day out! We’ve also got a compost and milkweed giveaway at Las Flores Community Center and 3 mini-workshops: rainwater catchment, soil and climate change, and vegetable garden setup.
How do I attend? This self-lead tour is on Saturday, May 17, from 10am-4pm. You can purchase your $5 brochure/ticket online or on the day of the tour at the Las Flores Community Center. Note: if you purchase your brochure by May 8, the brochure will be mailed to you. If you purchase online after May 8, your brochure will be available for pickup at Las Flores on May 17.
Want to be a Volunteer Garden Greeter and attend for free? Garden Greeters welcome visitors to the gardens, check tickets, share any specific information the garden owners may have (like a plant list, for example), and help guide visitors to other stops. Whether you’re a plant enthusiast, climate champion, or just love talking to people, this is a fun and meaningful way to spend a spring day! Shifts are 3 hours and volunteers can attend the tour for free when not on shift. If you’re interested in volunteering, contact Ashley@NapaRCD.org
