When caring for your milkweed in a container:
TRANSPLANTING TO A POT INSTRUCTIONS: It takes about one year for native milkweed plants to get established!
- Fill the pot with soil and pack it down. Dig a small hole.
- Remove milkweed start from small pot/tray, place in hole and cover with soil to the base of the stem.
- Water the milkweed in after planting.
- Keep soil evenly moist for the first 2 weeks after planting, and then water 1-2 times per week or as needed based on plant behavior.
- Cut plants down to 3” above the soil in late November. These perennial plants go dormant in the Winter, but will reemerge in the Spring!

COMO TRANSPLANTAR A UNA MACETA: ¡Las plantas nativas de algodoncillo tardan aproximadamente un año en establecerse!
- Llene la maceta con tierra. Cave un pequeño hoyo.
- Retire el algodoncillo de la maceta o bandeja pequeña, colóquelo en el hoyo y cúbralo con tierra hasta la base del tallo.
- Riegue el algodoncillo después de plantar.
- Mantenga el suelo uniformemente húmedo durante las primeras 2 semanas después de plantar, y luego riegue 1-2 veces por semana o según sea necesario según el comportamiento de la planta.
- Corte las plantas a 3″ sobre el suelo a finales de noviembre. ¡Estas plantas perennes permanecen inactivas en el invierno, pero resurgen en la primavera!

When planting your milkweed into the ground:

- Wait until the last frost has passed before planting.
- Dig into the ground to loosen soil. Mix planting location soil with a nice organic potting soil (1:1 ratio).
- Remove milkweed start from pot/tray, place in hole and cover with soil mixture up to the base of the stem.
- Water the milkweed in after planting. Log your planting on the Monarch Milkweed Mapper: https://www.monarchmilkweedmapper.org/
- Keep ground evenly moist for the first 2 weeks after planting, and then water 1-2 times per week or as needed based on plant behavior.
- Cut plants down to 3” above the ground in late November. These perennial plants go dormant in the Winter, but will reemerge in the Spring!
