RCD’s Sustainable Vineyard

The Huichica Creek Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Vineyard is located in the Carneros Region of southern Napa County. The RCD purchased the 21-acre property in 1991 with proceeds from the State Coastal Conservancy and the Wildlife Conservation Board with the goal of demonstrating a practical, economically viable agricultural system that can co-exist with, and become part of, a sustainable natural system. The property, historically grazed, is now planted with 8 acres of Chardonnay and 6 acres of Pinot Noir. Grapes from the property are sold and used in the production of Napa Valley wines. Grapes have been purchased by Mondavi Winery, Saintsbury, Domaine Carneros, and VSattui. The remaining 6 acres of the property are restored riparian and wetland areas. The property supports a variety of nesting waterfowl and mammals. The property also provides opportunities for youth and community education programs, Audubon bird-watching expeditions, USGS monitoring, restoration and cover crop trials, and workshops related to sustainable farming.
